WaterDataHub Drives Smart Management of Water Networks Through Securely Shared Data
The WaterDataHub project, led by the technology startup AVENTEC with the support of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the coordination of the CWP, will promote the creation of a safe space where network operators can share anonymized data to respond to several of their challenges. The initiative aims to respond to the management challenges faced by network operators in areas such as the management of physical assets, the pricing of subscribers and the administrative management itself. WaterDataHub has been designed with the aim of facilitating the creation of indicators and standards with which operators can improve their decision-making, as well as facilitating benchmarking in order to replicate successful strategies and prioritise improvement actions.
During the project, work will be done on the analysis of urban water cycle management processes, the creation of a sectoral DataWarehouse, the development of a secure anonymized data sharing model, the deployment of advanced analysis services based on artificial intelligence, and the full integration of the platform within the UPCxels multisectoral data space —operated by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)— provided by the infrastructure and the governance mechanisms of the project. The CWP will play a central role in project coordination, data collection and dissemination activities.
In addition, WaterDataHub has the participation and support of 14 network operators, at the time of launch of the project (CATSA, Aigües de Manresa, Aigües de Vilassar, Aigües de Banyoles, Ajuntament de Seva, Aigües de Vic, Nostraigua, Onaigua, SUMEM, FISERSA, Aigües de Blanes, Aigües del Prat, Aigües de Montblanc and Transparenta) who are currently sharing their data and will contribute to the validation of results, providing ideas and guidelines for the development of the tool that will be essential for the success of the initiative.
The open source software that will be developed during the project will include monitoring systems and predictive models to detect leaks and anomalies, tools to improve service quality and decision-making. With this initiative, Catalonia is preparing to become a benchmark in data sharing and digital innovation in the water sector, strengthening public-private collaboration and providing new tools specially designed for operators in small and medium-sized municipalities.
The project is funded within the framework of the call for Sectoral Data Spaces promoted by the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (SEDIA), the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service of the Government of Spain. This call is part of the actions financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
