OptimCPD revolutionizes water and energy efficiency in data centers thanks to an innovative digital platform
This experimental development project framed in Connected Industry 4.0 traces the path towards a new generation of sustainable digital infrastructures, aligned with the objectives of Industry 4.0 and the principles of the green transition.
Water and energy management in data processing centers (DPCs) takes a decisive step towards sustainability with the launch of OptimCPD, an advanced digital platform for the optimization and improvement of refrigeration systems. This experimental development project, framed in Connected Industry 4.0 and funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, brings together leading companies and technology clusters to digitally transform one of the most resource-intensive sectors.
Promoted by the Catalan Association for Innovation and Internationalization of the water sector, Catalan Water Partnership (CWP), coordinating entity, and with the participation of the companies Inypsa CW Infrastructures, Aventec, Disibeint Electronic, AppliediT and the onTech Innovation cluster, OptimCPD proposes a comprehensive solution that combines advanced sensorization, data analysis and predictive algorithms to achieve intelligent management of energy and water use in DPC cooling systems.
Technology for real efficiency
The OptimCPD platform is based on a digital architecture capable of monitoring the operation of cooling systems in real time, correlating electricity and hydraulic consumption to optimize thermal performance. Its intelligent core uses advanced operational analytics and machine learning models that detect anomalies, dynamically adjust thermal demand, and reduce manual intervention.
The OptimCPD project focuses on addressing the main technological and environmental challenges of data processing centres, essential but highly resource-intensive infrastructures. Its objectives include reducing energy consumption by improving the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) indicator, which measures the centre’s overall efficiency; the reduction of water use in evaporative or hybrid systems thanks to intelligent management in real time; and the integration of water and energy management by correlating electrical and hydraulic data to maximize performance.
The project also promotes digitization and advanced automation, with algorithms capable of anticipating anomalies and optimizing the operation of equipment, incorporating cybersecurity protocols aligned with NIS2 and ISO/IEC 27001 standards to protect the integrity of critical data and systems.
With this integration, data centers will be able to reduce their energy and water consumption, and contribute to a more efficient, sustainable and resilient operation in the face of scenarios of increasing water scarcity and energy pressure.
A consortium of technological excellence
OptimCPD brings together a consortium of technological excellence that integrates the expertise of CWP, Inypsa, Aventec, Disibeint Electronic, AppliediT and onTech Innovation. Together, these entities combine digital innovation, engineering, IoT sensing and advanced automation to optimize the energy and water management of data centers. This multidisciplinary alliance paves the way for a new generation of sustainable digital infrastructures, perfectly aligned with Industry 4.0 and the principles of the green transition. With this initiative, its members reaffirm that collaborative innovation and the intelligent use of technology are fundamental pillars for a digital future that is more efficient, resilient and in harmony with people and the planet.
