The formation of foams in the decanters and biological reactors of WWTPs can mean a decrease in the efficiency of water purification and an increase in the economic costs that are necessary to deal with this process. To deal with this problem, the SurVue project proposes several actions in this regard, the first of which is to carry out a study on the causes, the process and the variables involved in the formation of foams in urban WWTPs, considering also the possible actions and strategies that are currently used to mitigate it. The second of the actions is the development of a system for the detection and monitoring of foams in WWTPs that will include both a part of the physical elements installed in the WWTP itself (image capture and processing systems) and a system of algorithms for interpreting the visual information generated. The third is the implementation of an automatic control system to mitigate the proliferation of foams, adaptable according to the needs of each WWTP. This control system can be operated remotely through a web platform that will integrate all the information regarding the key variables linked to the formation of foams. The solution developed at SurVue will be a tool available to urban WWTP operating entities in order to reduce economic costs and optimize the wastewater treatment process.
