A new HORIZON2020 project, HYDROUSA was launched on July 1 to reinvent a water-resilient economy, mitigate climate change and reform the agri-food system.
HYDROUSA aims to promote innovative solutions for the Mediterranean islands in terms of water/wastewater treatment and how to manage it, which will close the water cycles and improve the energy and agriculture sectors . HYDROUSA goes beyond current water and wastewater management practices through innovative nature-based water management solutions for different types of water characterized by a minimal environmental footprint. Clean water cycles will be demonstrated, recovering products of added value, while integrating and interacting with the local market.
These technologies will be demonstrated in six different full-scale test sites on three Mediterranean islands (Lesvos, Mykonos and Tinos) while the transferability of HYDROUSA solutions will be evaluated in 25 cases in Mediterranean coastal areas and islands and in various rural areas or non-Mediterranean peri-urban areas.
HYDROUSA will not only develop and demonstrate innovative water services, but will revolutionize water value chains in Mediterranean areas, from water use to wastewater treatment and reuse. It will change the human water cycle by valuing non-conventional water resources, which are not being used at all.
The HYDROUSA project consortium consists of 27 high-level organizations involved in water administration, agriculture, ICT and business/marketing, dissemination/communication activities spanning the entire water supply chain . The work of the Catalan Water Partnership in this project is related to replicability, transferability, dissemination and communication. The project is directed and coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
