Descripció del projecte
The RE2AQUA project aims to promote the reuse of water in the agri-food industry, based on scientific and technical evidence, ensuring that it is suitable for reuse based on its level of quality and complying with current regulatory requirements. This will allow the sector to continue improving efficiency in water management, contributing to its adaptation to present and future water scarcity scenarios, minimizing the impact on its economic activity and making a more sustainable management of water resources. This initiative is part of the Grants for the execution of innovative projects of operational groups, an action of the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027 co-financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Innovation, the European Union and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
RE2AQUA will focus on the evaluation of innovative technologies such as membrane processes (ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis) and advanced oxidation (ozonation and UV treatment) to treat industrial wastewater and obtain high-quality reclaimed water. This can be reused in applications such as cleaning, refrigeration, water recirculation in industrial processes or crop irrigation. The objectives include demonstrating the technical, economic and safety feasibility of these technologies, meeting regulatory criteria and avoiding risk to human health.
The project will be developed in four companies in the agri-food sector in Catalonia representing different production areas:
- La Fageda (dairy industry).
- bonÀrea (meat industry and food processing).
- Falset-Marçà Cooperative (wine and oil production).
- Torrent (poultry industry).
RE2AQUA will contribute to reducing water consumption in these industries, complying with possible limitations on consumption in drought episodes such as the one we are currently experiencing, and demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of using reclaimed water. In addition, the project will produce a document of good practices for other companies in the agri-food sector, facilitating the dissemination of knowledge and providing recommendations to the administration.
