The RAINS (Resilient Agricultural Irrigation Systems for Water Scarcity in Europe) project aims to demonstrate and implement new innovative irrigation practices and technologies that improve efficiency in water and nutrient management, reducing the impact of extreme weather events such as droughts and torrential rains. To respond to these challenges, during the execution of the RAINS project, the technical feasibility of 10 solutions will be demonstrated and tested in 10 locations, in Spain and Greece, where there are several farms for various crops, which vary in size, climatic and geographical conditions. The technologies and solutions tested will be diverse and will be linked to obtaining irrigation water from alternative sources, the reuse of reclaimed water, the combination of water with various organic fertilizers, the improvement of soil qualities or the support of irrigation through digital tools. During the project, technical sessions and working groups will also be held aimed at co-creation, knowledge transfer and revision of regulations, in order to involve all the actors of the quadruple helix linked to the agricultural sector. RAINS will contribute to the reduction of water and nutrient consumption in agriculture, improving the productivity and sustainability of farms. In addition, it will help farmers adapt to climate change, promoting a transition towards more efficient and resilient irrigation systems. Through cooperation between researchers, companies and policymakers, the project aims to facilitate the replication of these solutions in other European regions.
