INCIBE and the UdG promote water cybersecurity with a practical workshop in Zaragoza
The Institute National Cybersecurity Agency (INCIBE) , an entity dependent on the Ministry for Digital Transformation, and the INCIBE Chair of Digitalization and Water Cybersecurity of the University of Girona carried out the Workshop on cybersecurity applied to the water cycle on September 18th.
The activity is part of the agreement between INCIBE and the University of Girona entitled “INCIBE Chair of Digitalization and Water Cybersecurity“, included in the program of Cybersecurity Chairs in Spain, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funding from the Next Generation-EU funds.
The workshop, held in Zaragoza and organized by the Catalan Water Partnership (CWP) with the collaboration of ZINNAE, aimed to provide participants with knowledge and tools to guarantee the operational safety of water infrastructures in the current digital context. Experts discussed the fundamentals of cybersecurity applied to the water sector, current regulations, the main digital threats and vulnerabilities, as well as strategies and solutions to prevent and respond to possible cyberattacks. The conference brought together professionals from the water sector and representatives of municipalities in the area, interested in how growing digitalisation is generating new risks linked to cybersecurity and how to deal with them effectively.
The conference was structured into a first technical block focused on the key aspects of cybersecurity in water infrastructures. María Torrecilla (LACROIX) explained how European cybersecurity regulations impact both the water sector and digital technology manufacturers. Next, Juan Caubet (Eurecat) presented a diagnostic methodology applied to critical infrastructures, while Fortià Bassas (Spin) shared experiences in the implementation of security systems in companies in the sector. Finally, David Bruguera (Adasa) highlighted the role of the National Security Scheme as a pillar to strengthen the resilience of the water sector.
The second block was dedicated to practical cases and real experiences. Concepción Cordón (HISPASEC) explained strategies to improve resilience in critical infrastructures of the water cycle, while Alberto Francosa (Veolia DT Norte) explained how the Veolia group is adapting to the growing regulatory hyperregulation in the field of cybersecurity. These interventions allowed attendees to learn first-hand about challenges and solutions applied in entities and operators in the water sector.
The conference highlighted the importance of strengthening cybersecurity in the water sector, promoting an exchange of knowledge and key experiences to move towards a safer and more resilient digitalisation.
