Conference on the transformation of WWTPs into biorefineries

On 24 April, the European projects UPSTREAM and ReLEAF organised the conference “Transforming WWTPs into biorefineries”, where they presented their objectives and progress. UPSTREAM, focused on improving river water quality, presented a case of removal and recovery of microplastics (MPs) in WWTPs for the production of safe reclaimed water. For its part, ReLEAF highlighted the potential of sewage sludge to generate bio-based fertilizers and create new value chains.

Eduard Borràs, from LEITAT, gave a presentation on new concepts to maximise biogas production. The day concluded with a round table on challenges and opportunities in the conversion of WWTPs into biorefineries, with the participation of Xavier Amores (CWP), Rubén Hervás (Global Omnium), Eduard Borràs (LEITAT) and Albert Bartolí (AERIS), moderated by Xialei You (LEITAT).
