The AquaLoops4Med project aims to foster an interregional network to promote a more sustainable and circular water management model in the Mediterranean agri-food sector. The initiative involves the regions of Catalonia, Basilicata (Italy), Attica, and Thessaly (Greece), bringing together 13 partners that combine technological, scientific, and business expertise, and is led by the Catalan Water Partnership.
AquaLoops4Med is funded under the European I3 programme and directly involves six SMEs in the consortium to develop and validate innovative solutions in real-life environments. In parallel, the project includes an Open Innovation call with a budget of €850,000, which will support an additional 15 to 18 SMEs for the development of collaborative interregional projects. This strategy enhances the scalability and market uptake of new technologies, multiplying the project’s impact beyond the initial consortium.
Among the key activities is the implementation of two collaborative pilot projects in Italy and Greece.
- The Italian pilot focuses on treating wastewater from cheese production using an algae-based photobioreactor coupled with a filtration system. The treated water will be reused for the fertigation of tomato crops.
- The Greek pilot involves rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment and reuse, and its application through automated and sensor-equipped fertigation systems that enable the use of reclaimed water on crops.
The project also plans the creation of a Community of Practice to promote collaboration among stakeholders, attract investment, and facilitate knowledge exchange on regional policies. Finally, AquaLoops4Med will assess the replicability of the solutions tested within the project—as well as those supported through cascade funding—and will promote their adoption in other Mediterranean countries facing similar water-related challenges. This will help design strategies that strengthen the agri-food sector’s resilience to climate change and support the creation of new value chains in Europe.
