The formation of foams in the settlers and biological reactors of WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plants) can lead to a decrease in water treatment efficiency and an increase in the economic costs required to manage this issue. To address this problem, the SurVue project proposes several actions. The first is to carry out a study on the causes, processes, and variables involved in foam formation in urban WWTPs, also considering the possible actions and strategies currently used to mitigate it. The second action is the development of a foam detection and monitoring system in WWTPs, which will include both physical components installed in the plant itself (image capture and processing systems) and an algorithm-based system for interpreting the generated visual information. The third action is the implementation of an automatic control system for mitigating foam proliferation, which can be adapted to the specific needs of each WWTP. This control system will be operable remotely through a web platform that will integrate all relevant information regarding the key variables linked to foam formation. The solution developed in SurVue will serve as a tool for urban WWTP operators to reduce economic costs and optimize the wastewater treatment process.
